The flakes are naturally salty. They are briny and rich in umami. The Red Palmaria has a rich, full flavour and pairs excellently with creamy dishes.

Dried seaweed quickly absorbs moisture and then loses its crispiness. After opening, seal tightly and store in a dry place.
We recommend not soaking the flakes beforehand. If you add them at the last moment, they will remain nice and crispy.
Add salt sparingly to your dish, as the flakes are naturally salty.

Sea lettuce (Green Ulva) pairs well with: Rice, avocado, cucumber, fennel, radish, yogurt, lemon, dill, and sesame seeds.

Dulse (Red Palmaria) pairs well with: Potato, white beans, beetroot, miso, nuts, cheese, whipped cream, chocolate, and oregano.

We have something special again: dried seaweed from Heerhugowaard, Netherlands. These seaweeds are cultivated by Seaweedland, an innovative Dutch start-up. The seaweeds grow naturally and without additives in clean seawater - in an on-land facility. This method means that washing after harvesting is not necessary, and all nutrients and the full, briny flavour are well preserved.

Dried and ground seaweeds can be used in your kitchen in the same way as spices and dried herbs. They are packed with a salty umami flavour and are therefore particularly well-suited for vegetarian cuisine.

This discovery pack contains two bags of different seaweeds. Firstly, Green Ulva. A salty sea lettuce that is widely used for various applications. Ulva contains a lot of proteins, fibres, and a mix of vitamins and minerals. This can certainly be called a superfood. It is rich in iodine, omega-3, probiotics, and antioxidants.

Secondly, Red Palmaria, which is a dulse. Dulse has a rich, full flavour and pairs excellently with creamy dishes.

Both seaweeds come in ground form, so you can easily sprinkle them over something or mix them into something. The Dulse has slightly thicker/firmer leaves and can therefore better withstand warm preparations.

The easiest application of ground seaweed is to use it as a sprinkle spice:
  • on avocado toast
  • on tomato soup
  • hummus or white bean soup
  • on tomato and mozzarella/burrata salad
  • on roasted beets

How is this chain structured?

All our chains have their own story. Their own piece of land, their own farmer. It is grown and processed in a certain way. Journey with us to the story behind this taste.

The seaweed comes from Seaweedland, located in Heerhugowaard. So, a product of Dutch soil!

Seaweedland is located in Hortimare, the world leader when it comes to cultivating seaweed.

Seaweed does not naturally grow on land, but in water. Innovation and development are paramount at Seaweedland, to cultivate seaweed in the most sustainable and efficient way possible.

The harvesting of seaweed is not dependent on seasons and can be harvested at any time.

Let's make an impact!

Every supply chain not only has its own story, but also its own challenges. We would like to tell you what impact we make per chain and how we deal with specific challenges.

Seaweed is a very sustainable food source. Packed with good nutrients and not depleting for nature. As we believe the protein transition will play an important role in the coming period, seaweed is a great flavour enhancer to create certain tastes without animal ingredients.

Seaweedland is also a startup company with the associated challenges. The installation in Heerhugowaard is their first trial, and it's a matter of trial and error, so we're learning together what works and what doesn't.

Frequently asked questions

  • Air, light, and moisture are detrimental to the quality of your spices. Therefore, store them in a tightly sealed jar or tin that is opaque (or in a dark kitchen cupboard or drawer). Also, do not store them above your stove, as cooking fumes can reach them there. Always ensure that you transfer spices from a repack into a well-sealing jar or tin as quickly as possible.

  • The shelf life of spices is primarily determined by the loss of flavor that occurs over time, as they generally don't go bad otherwise. We use a shelf life of 2.5 - 3 years after harvest. This depends partly on the time of bottling and also on whether they are whole spices that you need to grind yourself or pre-ground powder.

Spices in the supermarket are often already 2-3 years old before they are even bottled and then receive a shelf life of another 3-5 years. Mostly use your senses to judge if it's right. At some point, there will simply be no flavor left, which is a shame for that beautiful meal!

  • We do not have organic certification, even though our spices do meet these standards. All farmers work in harmony with nature and without pesticides, but the certification process is unfortunately very expensive. It is practically unaffordable for small farmers. And we want to show them that it is worthwhile to cultivate spices sustainably. That there are people willing to pay for a quality natural product and that they don't first have to make a huge, impossible investment in the form of certification.

Some of our farmers do have the certificate, by the way. Corporations, for example, can apply for the certification process jointly, making it much more affordable. But to be allowed to put this on the packaging, our entire chain would also have to be certified, including the sheltered workshop where the spices are packaged. This is currently not possible because they also work for other non-organic producers. So, in short: no, we are not officially certified, but the quality and way of working are at least as good.

  • Single Origin means that a product comes from one specific place. Often, harvests from different places, sometimes even from different countries and different years, are mixed together. Traders do this to develop the cheapest possible product with a consistent taste. With us, you know exactly where your spices come from, right down to the name of the farmer. This also means that the quality can sometimes vary, as it is a natural product. For example, one year might be drier than another, which can lead to a change in taste. But our farmers always strive for the highest possible taste experience, and you can taste it!

  • We strive to always purchase the latest harvest. Of course, it can sometimes happen that we still have some old stock while the new harvest is already available. So we cannot always guarantee that you will receive the very latest harvest, but we do strive for that as much as possible. On the packaging, you will find a QR code leading to a page where you can find out exactly when your spices were harvested and when they were filled into the tins/pouches. With this, we aim for full transparency in our process.

  • We ship to most European countries, but this naturally involves higher shipping costs. Would you like to order from a country, but it's not possible? Please contact us so we can look into the options.

  • At Sociale Werkplaats Siza, they do their utmost to pack orders the day after they are placed. When it's busy, it might take an extra day. They don't work on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, so if you order on a Thursday, for example, it will take a bit longer for your package to be shipped.

Once the packages are ready, they are picked up by the Groene Rijders and delivered by their bicycle couriers in the areas they serve, or outsourced to PostNL. Depending on how busy they are, they also aim to deliver within 1 business day.
