Earthy and floral with citrus notes

Does not need to be roasted.

When turmeric is heated above 130 °C, most of its flavors are released. This is best done in oils (or butter) as it is fat-soluble.

Can gently thicken soups and curries.

Pairs well with pumpkin, cauliflower, rice, lentils, tofu, lemon, and orange.

Turmeric gives a beautiful yellow glow to desserts and pastries. For example, lemon cake or flan.

The freshness of our turmeric ensures that its floral notes are preserved, so this turmeric does not have the bitter aftertaste often found in other turmerics.

Furthermore, it is very special that this is the only turmeric variety with more than 7% curcumin. Curcumin not only gives turmeric its deep color but also a slightly citrusy, pungent taste.

The Jaintia Hills in Northeast India, with their clay soil and mild climate, are the only place where this Lakadong turmeric grows. Attempts to cultivate this variety elsewhere have so far been unsuccessful.

How is this chain structured?

All our chains have their own story. Their own piece of land, their own farmer. It is grown and processed in a specific way. Journey with us to the story behind this flavour.

Lakadong turmeric grows exclusively in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, Northeast India.

We work with Remdor (farmer), Wanbor (local coordination & packer), and social entrepreneur Jeev Anksh, who handles the export. As you can see, there are several intermediate steps. These are necessary because it is a complex area with limited facilities and export opportunities.

Curcuma Longa Lakadong is cultivated on a small scale and traditionally by farmers. Cultivation is often combined with lime trees. The farmers use organic cow manure for fertilization and only minimal machinery, with most of the work done by hand.

There is hardly any access to chemical pesticides and artificial fertilizers. So, it's essentially 'organic by default': it's not a conscious choice by these farmers.

We share a mission with Wanbor and Jeev Anksh to preserve sustainable farming methods while increasing farmers' yields and incomes.

Growth cycle: April-January
Dried: February.

So, it takes 9 months for a turmeric root to fully mature, and approximately one month is needed for washing, cutting, and drying.

Gunajit - Jeev Anksh.

“We deeply value our partnership with Good Spice, built on mutual trust and a shared passion for quality food. Through this collaboration, our women tribal farmers have gained a platform to showcase their exotic produce grown in the remote Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, India.”

Let's make an impact!

Each supply chain not only has its own story, but also its own challenges. We would like to explain the impact we make per supply chain and how we deal with specific challenges.

We are one of the first importers of culinary spices from this region. Despite the limited facilities and knowledge about export in the supply chain, we are committed to opening up this market so that farmers can earn more and the region can develop other sources of income besides mining.

We are convinced that Lakadong has a unique market value that can provide sustainable economic development for this region.

To achieve this, we collaborate with local government, local social organizations, and other companies with a similar mission. Among other things, we are part of a subsidy project by SPVO, aiming to increase farmers' income in this region. This project is supported by the Social Sustainability Fund, as part of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The first chain of The Good Spice and simultaneously one of our most complex.

No international trade takes place in this region yet. As a result, there are few export facilities, such as administrative offices, shipment agents, and customs labs. This makes export a complex process. Together with our partners, we are pioneering in this area to make it accessible for export, so that the world can get to know this product. At the same time, we want to protect the sustainable way of agriculture by paying the best possible price.

Due to different social structures and traditions within farming communities, it is difficult to distribute the premium for turmeric fairly among farmers. We monitor this process as closely as possible and are constantly looking for improvements.

Due to limited facilities and the farmers' lack of export experience, it is challenging to maintain consistent quality despite the great potential of this turmeric variety. This year (2025), we will not have a harvest due to quality challenges. We have solutions ready for the 2026 harvest.

Frequently asked questions

  • Air, light, and moisture are not good for the quality of your spices. Therefore, store them in a tightly sealed jar or tin that is not transparent (or in a dark kitchen cupboard or drawer). Also, do not store them above your stove, as cooking fumes can reach them there. Make sure that you transfer spices from a repack into a well-sealing jar or tin as quickly as possible.

  • The shelf life of spices is primarily determined by the loss of flavour that occurs over time, as they generally don't spoil otherwise. We use a shelf life of 2.5 - 3 years after harvest. This depends partly on the time of packaging and also whether they are whole spices that you need to grind yourself or pre-ground powder.

Spices in the supermarket are often already 2-3 years old before they are even packaged and then get another shelf life of 3-5 years. Above all, use your senses to assess if it's right. At some point, there's simply no flavour left – what a waste of a good meal!

  • We do not have organic certification, even though our spices meet these standards. All farmers work in harmony with nature and without pesticides, but the certification process is unfortunately very expensive. It's actually unaffordable for small farmers. And we want to show them that it is worthwhile to grow spices sustainably. That there are people willing to pay for a quality natural product and that they don't have to make a huge, impossible investment in the form of certification first.

Some of our farmers do have the certificate, by the way. Corporations, for example, can apply for the certification process jointly, which makes it much more affordable. But to be allowed to put this on the packaging, our entire chain would also have to be certified, including the sheltered workshop where the spices are packaged. This is currently not possible, because they also work for other non-organic producers. So, in short: no, we are not officially certified, but the quality and way of working are at least as good.

  • Single Origin means that a product comes from one specific place. Often, harvests from different locations, sometimes even from different countries and different years, are mixed together. Traders do this to develop the cheapest possible product with a consistent taste. With us, you know exactly where your spices come from, right down to the name of the farmer. This also means that the quality can sometimes vary, as it is a natural product. For example, one year may be drier than another, which can lead to a change in taste. But our farmers always strive for the highest possible taste experience, and you can taste it!

  • We always strive to purchase the latest harvest. It can, of course, sometimes happen that we still have some of the previous harvest in stock while the new harvest is already ready. So we cannot always guarantee that you will receive the very latest harvest, but we do aim to do so as much as possible. On the packaging, you will find a QR code to a page where you can find exactly when your spices were harvested and when they were filled into the tins/pouches. With this, we aim for complete transparency in our process.

  • We ship to most European countries, but this will, of course, involve higher shipping costs. Do you want to order from a country that isn't listed? Please contact us so we can explore the options.

  • At the Siza Social Workshop, they do their utmost to pack orders the day after they are placed. When it's busy, it might take an extra day. They don't work on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, so if you order on a Thursday, for example, it will take a bit longer for your package to be shipped.

Once the packages are ready, they are picked up by the Groene Rijders and delivered by their bike couriers in the areas they serve, or outsourced to PostNL. Depending on the volume, they also aim to deliver within 1 working day.

The taste of nature

The flavors nature can produce: incredible! We are therefore always looking for the best flavors and the best applications. Quality always comes first.

Packed with love

Filling the bags and cans and packing the parcels is done by the Siza Social Workshop. They enjoy doing this work, but sometimes your order may take an extra day.

Steward-Owned Company

We are Steward Owned, which means the company serves our mission and we use profits to invest in the company and in our farmers.
