Discover the rich flavour world of peppers: from umami to floral

LEIDEN, August 2023 - Many spices are on a long journey for years before they reach the supermarket, with the result that the flavour that remains is only a fraction of what it once was. The spice brand The Good Spice is unleashing a flavour revolution with single origin spices that are fairly traded through a short supply chain. The brand is now introducing the 'Pepper is not just pepper' tasting, which reveals the distinct flavours of this indispensable spice.

Back to the origin of flavour
Often, harvests of different qualities from various countries are blended to achieve an average consistent flavour. They also remain on the shelf for a long time, as numerous companies are involved in trading after the harvest. In contrast, The Good Spice only works with spices sourced from a single region, which reach the consumer through the shortest possible chain, to preserve optimal flavour and ensure a fair price for the farmer. The package contains three unique types of pepper, each with a unique origin and flavour, and sustainably grown. The package is now available through the webshop and sales points.

Taste the essence: three abundant flavours

Pepper has the ability to bring dishes to life and stimulate the senses. The founders of The Good Spice accidentally discovered the Adi Highland Pepper with its exceptionally large grains and salty, earthy-sweet flavour during a visit to southwest India. There, efforts are currently being made to reintroduce this indigenous species. The pepper has a floral aroma, a salty and earthy-sweet taste, and a mild spiciness. The second pepper in the package is Trang Sunset Pepper from southern Thailand. This pepper, with its fresh, floral fruit flavour, is unique to that region. Farmers are constantly seeking sustainable solutions in cultivation. The package also includes Island Black Pepper from Sri Lanka. This is grown without pesticides and chemicals in a food forest and has a smoky aroma, umami flavour, and powerful sharpness.

Iona Mulder, founder of The Good Spice: "Many people sprinkle pepper over their food daily without a second thought, not considering where that pepper comes from or how it was grown. With coffee, chocolate, or cheese, people quickly discuss quality or production methods, but the spice aisle in the supermarket doesn't yet receive that attention. With this package, we want to introduce everyone to the delicious world of pepper and how versatile this spice is. Our spices taste much more intense than what people are probably used to!"

A fair relationship with the farmer

The Good Spice collaborates with farmers with whom they have a personal relationship for their spices. The spices are grown sustainably, using traditional methods. They employ regenerative practices, without the use of pesticides. By offering these farmers a direct international market and a fair price, financial room is created for the development of their production in harmony with nature. This allows farmers to continue using traditional methods and prevents them from being forced to produce large quantities for little money, at the expense of quality.

About The Good Spice

The Good Spice offers the finest quality spices, tasting as nature intended. The Good Spice is on a mission to unleash a true flavour revolution and stand up against large manufacturers. Their single origin spices give new meaning to flavour, quality, and sustainability. This starts with a good relationship with the farmers. They are encouraged to grow crops in harmony with nature, to choose quality over quantity, and to determine themselves what they need to earn for a liveable income. This approach makes a world of difference. For the flavour and the farmer. The spices come directly from the field, fresh to the Netherlands and are 100% traceable. These are available through the webshop and sales points in the Netherlands.
