Our debut on Keuringsdienst van Waarde
We love Keuringsdienst van Waarde. A wonderful program that exposes the problems in the food industry in understandable language. And fortunately, they also occasionally shed light on the abuses and fraudulent practices in the spice industry.
This time, they made an episode about cinnamon and Iona was called to explain her perspective on the story. Quite an honor! You can watch the episode here. Unfortunately, Iona was primarily portrayed as a 'cinnamon seller' and only a very small part of the interview, which lasted over an hour, was used. Nevertheless, we are very happy for the attention cinnamon is currently receiving, because do you know exactly what you're buying when you simply buy a jar of cinnamon at the supermarket?
A brief summary
We have written a more comprehensive blog about the difference between cassia cinnamon and Ceylon cinnamon. In the episode of Keuringsdienst van Waarde, it mainly became clear that you often have no idea what exactly is in the jar you buy. What quality is the cinnamon? Where was it harvested? When was it harvested? Who harvested it and how were they treated? Was the cinnamon grown naturally and were people and nature treated with respect? As soon as you start asking yourself questions, you realize that very few answers are actually provided.
And that's something we at The Good Spice want to change. Supply chains need to be shorter, more transparent, and fairer. That's why you'll find all the information on our packaging.
