Why everyone benefits from regeneratively farmed spices

Flavorful and healthy yields from the land are unfortunately not a given in our current economic system. Yields must be high enough, and money must be made. This conventional agriculture, which relies on mass production, has a negative impact on people and nature. Taste or producing a nutritious product is usually not the first priority.

Positive impact

In regenerative agriculture, the starting point is different, focusing on making a positive impact. Of course, there must also be a good harvest that brings in a profit, but farmers achieve this by not only taking from the land but also by giving something back. The land is continuously nourished, and soil life flourishes. And with that, regenerative farmers also ensure that biodiversity is restored. By working with nature, we also receive a lot in return. The result is flavorful food packed with nutrients.

And that also applies to spices. If they are grown in harmony with nature and in a regenerative way, you get sustainable spices bursting with flavor. And not only that. If you go for 100% natural, you get the best result: an intense color, aroma, and taste, full of essential oils and nutrients.

At The Good Spice, we now know from experience that regenerative agriculture works. Under the right conditions, this way of working offers many ecological, social, and economic benefits. That's why we attach great importance to the origin of our spices. We personally know all the farmers with whom we have a direct collaboration, pay them a fair price, and encourage a way of working that acts in harmony with nature and their environment. We then bring the spices to the Netherlands via the shortest possible supply chain so that all spices reach our customers as fresh as possible.

Specialty spices

Perhaps you are familiar with the term specialty coffee. This coffee is of superior quality and is grown with great care and love by the farmer. This coffee is then processed, traded, and prepared correctly. Every step in the chain is designed in such a way that the highest possible quality reaches the end-user.

We do the same with spices. We know where our spices come from, by whom and how they are grown, and that they are of the highest quality. We purchase our spices based on taste and are constantly in dialogue with farmers to see how we can maintain quality. Taste is our most important starting point.

Take farmer Péter, for example. He produces our Riverside Sweet Paprika Powder. His methods ensure that he has maintained the characteristic taste of the paprika powder for his region for decades. His motivation is to pass on healthier land to future generations.

Sustainable spices

What exactly are sustainable spices? The main difference between sustainable spices and conventional spices is that sustainable spices are grown and harvested in an environmentally friendly environment. This means that no harmful pesticides, chemicals, or artificial fertilizers are used. In addition, sustainable spices are often organically grown and are usually produced using sustainable techniques such as water and energy conservation, which reduce CO2 emissions and overall environmental impact. Our cinnamon and black pepper, for example, come from Ekoland, a Sri Lankan cooperative that grows indigenous species in the Kandyan Forest Garden. They constantly look at what works best for nature. They don't push their harvest with all sorts of tricks and resources but make the most of what works best in the natural environment. They do this with the Agro-forestry method, essentially a food forest.

Single Origin

To enhance all the goodness of our spices, The Good Spice only imports Single Origin spices. Single Origin spices come from one specific location. Just like with wine, for example, the soil (the terroir) on which the crops grow influences the taste. And that's why Single Origin spices come from a single harvest. Different harvests are therefore not mixed.

Different varieties all have their own characteristics with a unique composition of aromas and oils. With the help of regenerative agriculture, these unique characteristics are preserved. If the harvests from different farms are thrown together, this unique composition is lost in bulk. This is prevented by working according to the Single Origin principle.

Single Origin is a benchmark for quality!
